Maddie
Robert and Amy Savedra and Little Miss Maddie
My story begins June 2004, with the passing of my 13-year old terrier mix, Sadie. She had been suffering with congenital heart failure for over a year, and the heartbreaking decision had to be made for her to be euthanized. I found some comfort in the fact that her littermate Katie, and our 12 year old cocker spaniel Precious, remained. I was grief-stricken with this loss, and found it difficult to even think of obtaining any additional dogs. However, after two months, I began passively perusing websites of local humane societies and rescue organizations. "Just looking", I told my husband. I discovered United Hope for Animals which was advertised on 1-800-save-a-pet website. All of the dogs I have owned have been rescues, and I was determined to carry on that tradition.
I started looking at pictures of their available animals, and was drawn to "Kiwi", a black terrier mix. When I clicked on her picture, 3 wriggly little puppies appeared. I hadn't been considering a puppy and my puppy skills were rusty, yet the idea of a new start appealed to me. The little female "Winnie", with her funny little face, and questionable parentage (terrier, of course) was my first pick. I immediately contacted the office of United Hope for Animals, and they explained in detail the mission of UHA . I could discern their genuine care and concern for each pet on their website, which impressed me even more. After several conversations we arranged for me to meet Winnie at the home of her foster mom, Susan. I was so nervous!
Susan was terrific! She was so patient and kind with these pups. I spent about half an hour with them all and she welcomed me back again. Well, that very evening, I took her up on her offer, this time bringing my husband. He met with all the litter, and on our way home the decision was made. Our lives and hearts had room for one more. Susan was tearful the night I came to gather up Maddie to take her to her new home, and encouraged me to keep her current on her progress, which I have gladly done. Needless to say, we have new joy in our midst-along with a few chewed possessions, some accident stains, and toys strewn about. The old girls" didn't exactly welcome her with open paws, but they have accepted her boundless energy as a way of life. I truly believe Maddie breathed new life into their old bones!
Our most heartfelt thanks go out to all the volunteers at United Hope for Animals for their commitment to obtaining permanent homes for these formerly homeless and hopeless animals. We feel most privileged to be sharing our lives with the newest member of our family, our precious Miss Maddie.
